Philippa will be pleased!
Finally the BBC's much trumpeted (and very expensively developed) iPlayer service is available as a streaming YouTube-like service, and therefore is available to those on Linux and Mac computers as well as Windows. Nigella has never looked so good!
Hurrah, I've just checked in for my BA flight to Orlando, which leaves Gatwick at 11:40 tomorrow morning. The Passport has been found, the paperwork pulled together, and the Out of Office agent set... We are definitely getting there!
Having looked again at the agenda for the week, I have to say that I am thrilled and amazed at the volume and variety of sessions this year - a real step up from previous Lotuspheres I have attended.
For me the only blot on the landscape is a clash for the 7am (yes folks, that's 7 AM) slot on Thursday, with two sessions that I would love to be at:
BOF508 The Lotus Software Blogging Community (Not Just Bloggers!)
and
BOOM101 Running IBM Lotus Notes on Macintosh
Given that BOOM101 is just about the only Mac-focused session on the agenda, I feel it is really important, but I don't want to miss the Blogging Birds of a Feather session either... I think it's too late to rescheule either session (I have asked IBM anyway), so I'll have to miss one... What shall it be?
Apple is obviously pushing the iLife suite pretty hard this Christmas, and no wonder too, as it really helps make a Mac what it is today... "The Digital Hub" of your lives... (hey I can sell!)...
Available on the Apple site. Take a look...
If you're a Windows user (like me unfortunately when in work mode) you've probably felt upset one or two times when us Mac users mention an application that adds sheer loads of functionality to their system but is a Mac application only - we try not to do this too much, but sometimes just can't help it! Well fortunately, those times are slowly ending as more and more companies release Windows programs inspired by their superior Mac counterparts.
The latest program to get the Windows treatment is Quicksilver (the most amazing productivity-enhancing app I've ever used),
which goes by the name AppRocket and was built by Candy Labs. What this
program allows you to do is basically search for a lot of information
on your PC or on the internet in a very quick way. It's not quite up to Quicksilver standards yet, but is getting there...
So if you happen to use both platforms or want to try and add more functionality to Windows give it a shot, I have and don't regret it one bit, a 5 stars application, and it only costs $18 USD.
Ed says that Notes 7.0.2 on the Mac is now into beta for "managed beta" customers.
Given that 7.0.2 on Windows and all the server platforms is about to go Gold (i.e. finalised ready for release) next week, it is a real shame that the Mac client has slipped until December.
However, given that the previous Mac Notes clients have been of such poor quality, maybe the delay isn't such a bad thing! As long as they sort the quality, performance and look and feel, I'll be very happy!
Despite all the rumours doing the rounds this week about an Apple Special Event on 12th September, Apple have quietly announced a raft of new and improved products today.
Firstly. the entire iMac range has been updated with the new Intel Core2Duo chips, thus significantly improving performance. Also, a huge 24inch iMac is added to the range (the machine on the right above, next to the existing 17" and 20" models) - what a fabulous system, perfect as an all-in-one TV/media centre/desktop system - the real hub of your iLives! The 24" model with 2.16GHz, Superdrive, 1GB RAM, 250GB disk is just £1,349 including VAT - a good deal I think. The range starts at £699 including VAT.
Also, the Mac Mini range has also been upgraded to Core2Duo chips, all for the same price as previously.
So the question remains, what of the 12th September? iPod Video and ITMS Movies anyone? Oh and how to convince the family that we need a 24" iMac!
For a while now, I've been trying to find a reliable way to share an iPhoto library between multiple users on single system... Why? Because I see no reason for my better half and I to have separate stores for our photos, and thus to be able to add new photos from our camera without caring who is logged into the system...
Up until now this has been problematic, as even using the Mac's reliable and flexible Unix underpinnings, it is difficult to set permissions correctly to allow access to both the photos that are in the library NOW, plus to maintain NEW photos correctly as well.
Fortunately, at least on MAC OS X 10.4 Tiger and with iPhoto 6, there is an answer, so thanks to Ad Hominem for finding the solution - it works great!
Now for getting the same trick to work with iTunes!
