90 minutes in 60 seconds - all you need!
As usual, Apple has delivered some inspired and humorous new Get a Mac ads, yet at the same time they are hugely cutting towards Microsoft (especially Vista).
I particularly like the PR lady - yup folks, this how PR works ;-)
More ads (and at higher quality) are available on the Apple site.
On the subject of Vista - I've had to take the kids PC back to Windows XP as I couldn't get their games to work on Vista (that's 3 hours of our lives wasted!). Oh, and Leopard went on in less than an hour and thus far has had zero problems... Hasta la Vista, baby...
No doubt about it, the most desirable notebooks around, and probably the best Windows laptop as well as the best Mac laptop too...
Faster CPUs, more memory and brand new LED-lit screens all feature. Now if I had to buy a new laptop for work, the 17" is the one for me!
So says AppleInsider anyway.
Therefore US release is imminent (possibly 11 June, more likely by the end of June). However European release is still slated for the autumn timeframe, which is a great shame ;-(
Can't wait to get my hands on one!
Jobs then turned his attentions to the awful state of Apple's public image. It had been sullied by the hard times the company had been through in the previous decade, and it had shed the image of David to IBM's (or Microsoft's) Goliath. Apple was a tired company with tired products and boring leaders. The real clout in new startups like Real and Yahoo! Jobs, in what was by now typical behavior, took on the problem personally instead of delegating it to one of his subordinates.
He thus engaged three ad agencies to present new advertising ideas. Low End Mac's review of this process tells us:
Lee Clow, now the creative director for Chiat/Day, was one of them. On August 3, 1997, he presented a new slogan and aesthetic for Apple's ads: Think Different.
Clow said that he wanted to feature filmmakers at Dreamworks SKG working on their Macs.
Jobs was enamored with the concept, though now using anonymous figures. And instead of Dreamworks filmmakers, he wanted to use celebrities and thinkers.
Steve ran the ad creation process himself, in certain cases (Joan Baez and Yoko Ono) even contacting the rights-owners themselves to request permission to use the images.
The ad shown to the left launched on September 28, 1997, along with black and white billboard and print advertising.
One of the most memorable elements was the free-form poem written by one of the Chiat/Day employees and read by Richard Dreyfuss (shown right).
Despite using no product images, not even mentioning an electronics device, and using images that were mostly 10 years+ old, the adverts captured the public attention in an amazing way, and went on to massively change the perception of Apple amongst the public, consumers and business alike.
The Think Different slogan was finally retired in 2002, by which time Apple was firmly back in the vanguard of the computer industry.
It's amazing what a clever slogan, a poem and some black and white images can do ;-)
Apple is obviously pushing the iLife suite pretty hard this Christmas, and no wonder too, as it really helps make a Mac what it is today... "The Digital Hub" of your lives... (hey I can sell!)...
Available on the Apple site. Take a look...
In the US, Apple have taken the forward looking step of offering their Educational discounts to Homeschooling parents - this page explains the rules...
![]() Homeschooling has grown significantly over the past several years, with current estimates of up to 1.5 million students now attending homeschool. At Apple, we have focused on building technology solutions for education for over 25 years. And now, recognizing the growing demand of homeschoolers, we are making the full range of Apple’s educational products and solutions available to homeschools. |

However, there is no equivalent page for the UK, so I have asked Apple what the situation is - I haven't had a response back yet. Given that this discount is worth £300 off a high-end iMac, it is certainly worth getting!
Despite all the rumours doing the rounds this week about an Apple Special Event on 12th September, Apple have quietly announced a raft of new and improved products today.
Firstly. the entire iMac range has been updated with the new Intel Core2Duo chips, thus significantly improving performance. Also, a huge 24inch iMac is added to the range (the machine on the right above, next to the existing 17" and 20" models) - what a fabulous system, perfect as an all-in-one TV/media centre/desktop system - the real hub of your iLives! The 24" model with 2.16GHz, Superdrive, 1GB RAM, 250GB disk is just £1,349 including VAT - a good deal I think. The range starts at £699 including VAT.
Also, the Mac Mini range has also been upgraded to Core2Duo chips, all for the same price as previously.
So the question remains, what of the 12th September? iPod Video and ITMS Movies anyone? Oh and how to convince the family that we need a 24" iMac!
